Dealing with oily, acne-prone skin? Then it’s high time you curated your skin care routine to deal with the unique set of challenges your unruly skin type possesses.
Yes, you still need to moisturise even if you have breakouts. No, an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude won’t clear your bacne (although a body wash specifically for acne might help a bit).
But you’ve likely already gleaned that a cleanser is the best place to start when you’re dealing with excess amounts of oil, sebum, and breakout causing bacteria on a daily basis.
However, not all cleansers are made with acne-prone skin in mind — which is why we’ve taken the liberty of sourcing seven acne-prone skin friendly formulas for you to try.

What type of cleanser is best for acne?
“Gentle foaming or low lather gel cleansers remove excess sebum without the suffocating waxes often found in creamy formulas,” Cosmetic Doctor, Dr Amy Chahal tells ELLE.
“Mild exfoliating acids (like 0.5 to one per cent salicylic acid, zinc, and soothing aloe) keep pores clear, while calming redness,” she explains. “If you’re avoiding medicated actives, these still give you a gentle purifying edge.”
“Skip harsh sulphates, micro-bead scrubs, and high concentrations of essential oils as they can spike inflammation and can provoke micro tears in blemish pore skin,” she warns.
How often can you cleanse acne-prone skin?
“Twice daily is the sweet spot,” Dr Chahal tells us.
“Morning; to clear overnight oil and apply treatments on a clean canvas. Evening; to melt SPF, makeup and pollution,” she explains. “Any more and you risk barrier burnout, any less and you’re leaving breakout fuel behind.”
