Emily Ratajkowski is really in her comeback era, and if her increased presence on TikTok wasn’t proof enough, then her latest look certainly is.
Attending W Magazine’s 50th anniversary, she appeared in nothing but a Fleur du Mal lingerie set and completely see-throug fishnet gown from Tory Burch’s recent Spring 2023 runway collection over the top. As we know, the model loves a daring look and we can usually count on her to push the envelope with dress codes, but this look in particular has undoubtedly signalled the arrival of lingerie dressing in a big way.
For those unfamiliar with lingerie dressing, the trend is exactly what you’d imagine from the name alone — wearing lingerie as clothing. Your collection of intimates, once reserved for the bedroom, is now becoming more socially acceptable to wear in the streets, whether it’s a silky corset with a pair of jeans or a lace bralette with an oversized blazer over the top. And, as Em Rata has just demonstrated, the trend also extends to wearing see-through dresses with lingerie underneath.
While wearing a négligée as a camisole top or a minidress with a built in bustier is a more casual take on the trend, opting for nothing but intimates underneath a sheer dress is at the complete other end of the spectrum. But, if you’re going to do something, you may as well go all out, right?
How to style lingerie under sheer dresses
Depending on the cut of the dress, you could go braless à la Bella Hadid, or, if that’s a little too risqué, you could opt for a dress with a built-in corset/bustier to keep everything in place.
Some dresses are a little less sheer than others (think thicker mesh versus barely-there fishnets), so if you’re more comfortable flashing a little less skin, opt for something with a thicker material or pattern. Some dresses are also just partly sheer, offering a high split or netting around the leg area while being completely covered on top — it’s just about finding a design which feels right for you.
As for the underwear component, you can go full thong for a cheeky twist or keep it more modest in a high-waisted brief, pending your mood.
