Many people thought 2020 would be the year of clear vision and clean slates, but as we approach the end, there’s been a lot to process.
The year has been filled with all kinds of stress, not limited to the 2019/2020 Australian Bushfire Crisis, and President Donald Trump nearly starting a war with Iran before we even had time to recover from our New Year’s Eve hangovers.
Just as Australia was recovering from the fires, the Coronavirus pandemic swung in like a wrecking ball, Black Lives Matter protests fought for racial justice and the U.S. Election saw President Trump kicked out of office.
Though 2020 has dealt blow-after-blow for many of us, Millennials and Gen-Z’s will argue we’ve been in similar situations before—we’ve outlasted 9/11, a global economic crash, and all kinds of political uncertainty, and there is always an end date.
These obviously aren’t situations to be taken lightly, but the innate sense of humour among many young people means that memes are an almost universal self-soothing measure at this point. That, and repeatedly viewing Rickey Thompson’s painfully relatable ode to 2019.
