When a 20-year-old Amanda Knox moved to Perugia, Italy in 2007, for a student exchange program, she never imagined that her name would become synonymous with one of the most sensationalised murder cases of our generation.
In November that year, Knox’s roommate, British student Meredith Kercher, was found murdered in the apartment they shared. What followed was a years-long legal case that saw Knox convicted, acquitted, re-convicted and finally exonerated of murder charges in 2015, after spending nearly four years in prison.
The case drew international media frenzy, with Knox branded “Foxy Knoxy” and vilified in tabloids across the globe. Everything from her facial expressions to her general appearance, and love life, were interrogated in the media, with facts taking a back seat to the constant speculation over her innocence.
The case has sparked countless true crime documentaries and pocast series, with Knox even appearing on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast in September 2024. Now, almost two decades later, Knox is releasing The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, a scripted limited series that sees Knox herself serving as executive producer.
Partnering with Monica Lewinsky, who has endured her own public vilification, Knox’s goal is to show the human cost of media bias and wrongful conviction. Grace Van Patten, who you may recognise from Tell Me Lies, is stepping Knox’s shoes for the series, and has admitted that it was a role she was nervous to take on. Her nervousness is understandable. You only need to look at the early reviews of the show, which range from celebrating Knox for “reclaiming her narrative” to calling it a misguided series that fails to place Kercher as the central victim in the story.
