THE RUNDOWN:
- Jenny Han has confirmed that The Summer I Turned Pretty film is on its way.
- No release date has been confirmed yet.
- Lola Tung and Christopher Briney will reprise their roles.
It’s official. Prime Video has confirmed that The Summer I Turned Pretty will return one last time — this time as a feature film. The hit adaptation of Jenny Han’s bestselling novels aired its final season this year, with the finale episode dropping on Wednesday. Finally, we found out who Belly would end up with, and though the final scenes were somewhat contentious, it appears that will all be fixed in a film.
The main complaint, from the ELLE Australia team, at least, was that we wanted more. Thankfully, we now know that Han is set to write and direct a movie that promises to give fans a deeper sense of closure.
The series, which became a global phenomenon across three seasons, followed Lola Tung’s Belly as she navigated the complexities of first love, family bonds, grief, and the difficulty of falling in love with two brothers. Its final episodes delivered the long-awaited payoff of Belly’s messy love triangle with brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
In the end, Belly reunited with Conrad in Paris, with their love story finally coming full circle, though the show diverged in places from Han’s original We’ll Always Have Summer epilogue. Still, with key pieces of the novels left unadapted, the announcement of a film feels like a natural extension.
“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said upon the announcement that a film is on the way. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.” Tung and Briney are confirmed to reprise their roles, with the film expected to pick up where the finale left off.
No release date has been announced, but anticipation is already running very, very high. We say bring it on.
