The Biggest Snubs (And Surprises) From The 2025 Emmy Award Nominations

Happy for HBO, I guess?

It’s been a big year for TV. With Hollywood seeming to recover from the writers’ strike that saw the industry grind to a halt in 2023, the last year has seen back to back hits land on our screens. Unless you’re a devout fan of all genres, it’s unlikely you’ve made your way through the entire list of shows honoured in the Emmy Awards‘ 2025 nominations list.

The eligibility window for this years awards ran from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, which means Severance season 2, The White Lotus season 3, The Pitt, The Penguin, The Last of Us season 2, Hacks season 4, Adolescence, and The Handmaid’s Tale‘s final season were all on the table for nominations.

But like all things in life, the Emmy nominations were never going to shake out in everyone’s favour. Fans were quick to point out a few glaring snubs (Overcompensating and The Handmaid’s Tale are two obvious ones) and surprises (we’re thrilled for Beyoncé’s nomination for her halftime show on Netflix). Ahead, we break down who’s nominated, who’s not, and who managed to sneak their way onto the list

The Biggest Snubs From The 2025 Emmy Nominations

Snub: Overcompenating

Overcompentating‘s series creator and star, Benito Skinner, was submitted for the categories for the Lead Actor and Outstanding Comedy Series categories and was very sadly unsuccessful in this bid. The show is based loosely on Skinner’s own life and it won fans over for being a bright light in a tough year, but sadly even though the series was put forward for many categories, it didn’t secure a single nom.

Snub: Industry

HBO’s London-based finance drama, Industry, was a breakout hit in the past year, but apparently the Emmy’s voting body did not agree with viewers about that fact. Now in its fourth season, the drama has amassed a loyal fanbase and many are saying there’s one obvious reason it didn’t get any nominations this year: “it’s too cool for the Emmys anyway”.

Snub: Selena Gomez

Many expected Selena Gomez to receive a nomination for her role in Only Murders in the Building, but alas, it wasn’t to be.

Snub: The Handmaid’s Tale

The final season of The Handmaid’s Tale was a tough watch, as it returned to its roots and showed the stark reality of life in Gilead (and allowed audience to draw parallels to the current state of the world). It’s received many, many Emmy Awards in the past, so fans of the show would be forgiven for thinking it (and Elisabeth Moss specifically) would at least receive a couple of nods this year. (Hello, Yvonne Strahovski’s performance was perfect.) In the end, it only received one nomination for Cherry Jones’ performance (she also won an Emmy for this role in 2019).

Snub: YouTube

Streaming services have shaken up the Emmy nominations in the past few years, so it now seems a bit late to the game when it comes to nominating online series that outperform many traditional shows. Hot OnesGood Mythical Morning and Challenge Accepted are all noted as obvious oversights by Deadline.

The Biggest Surprises From The 2025 Emmy Nominations

Surprise: Coleman Domingo

Coleman Domingo got the recognition he deserves for his emotional, honest, and holarious performance in The Four Seasons, and for that, we applaud the voting body.

Severance

Surprise: Severance

Of course, it’s no surprise that Apple TV+ series Severance‘s second season received nominations, but 27 nominations is a huge effort.

Surprise: Beyoncé

Over the years, Beyoncé has received eight Emmy nominations, but while she may be the most awarded Grammy artist in history, she’s still waiting for that Emmy win. Now might be her chance, with her nomination in the category Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for her Beyoncé Bowl performance, which aired on Netflix at Christmas last year. She is up against the SNL50: The Anniversary Special and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, so it’ll be stiff competition for sure.

Surprise: Uzo Aduba

Of course, there’s no surprise that Uzo Aduba would land an Emmy nomination for her role in The Residence, but rather, the fact that a cancelled show has received one. The series, which airs on Netflix and is a comedic murder mystery-style series based in the White House was canned after one season, but its legacy lives on in this year’s nominations.

Surprise: Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese is no stranger to awards season, but he secured his first nomination in an acting category at this year’s Emmy, which is a surprise. He appeared in The Studio, which received 23 nominations this year.
