The internet has absolutely lost is over the weekend, with Taylor Swift finally dropping Red (Taylor’s Version) — the re-recording of her hit 2012 album, Red. As any true Taylor fan knows, new songs almost always spell trouble for her ex-boyfriends, and in this instance, it’s Jake Gyllenhaal who has copped the fire of a thousand suns.
Many of the songs (namely All Too Well) are rumoured to be about Gyllenhaal, whom Swift dated for three months in 2010. He was just about to turn 30, while she was just about to celebrate her 21st Birthday. Some of the lyrics are very cutting, pinpointing the reason for their breakup as their age gap, despite the fact that he would go on to date girls of the same age later on.
“And I was never good at telling jokes but the punch line goes / I’ll get older but your lovers stay my age,” and “You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine / And that made me want to die.” Oof, heavy.
