After years of whispers, we finally know when Melbourne’s Mecca flagship on Bourke Street will open its doors — and it’s soon.
Located within the former Cole’s Book Arcade, Mecca Bourke Street is a 4,000-square-metre behemoth that spans three floors and will boast more than 200 beauty brands and 80 services. To put that into perspective, the store will be three times the size of Sydney’s Mecca flagship store on George Street.
“Mecca Bourke Street is the physical embodiment of our purpose – to embolden through beauty by helping people look, feel, and be their best,” said Mecca Founder and Co-CEO, Jo Horgan. “It reimagines what experiential retail can be, fusing creativity, culture, and collaboration to create something so much more than a store — it’s the Mecca of all Meccas.”
housed within a 1930s heritage-listed building that was once referred to as the “grandest bookshop in the world”, it’s a store is as much an homage to its stories past as it is a veritable heaven for beauty-lovers. The space was designed in partnership with Sydney based architects, Studio McQualter, and maintains the building’s original charm, with terrazzo flooring and arched window detailing.
The space also features more than 20 artworks by women, curated by Charlotte Day as part of Mecca M-Power, an initiative that champions “gender equality through female-led design”. The team has also considered all the little details that make you want to spend hours wandering through the store, like mindful lighting and air purification to make the space more comfortable. (Which is, on second thought, perhaps not so good for our bank balances.)
Going beyond the beauty products on offer in-store, there will also be a fragrance gallery, a café, and a beauty newsroom that will display the latest beauty news at the front of the store. There will also be a number of beauty treatments on offer, such as Mecca Aesthetica, where you can receive advanced skin treatments by dermal therapists; Beauty Atelier, for hair, makeup, and nail services; plus the Mecca Apothecary, with an on-site naturopath and dispensary. There’ll also be an entire mezzanine dedicated to gifting, which will be very handy when Christmas rolls around.
Mecca Bourke Street will be located at 299 Bourke Street and will open on August 8.
